How to schedule Bluesky posts with an app password
Bluesky has no native scheduling. See how to schedule posts with an app password, 300 characters, 4 images and clickable links, step by step.
Many people arrived on Bluesky and brought the habit of posting every day. The catch is that Bluesky has no scheduling of its own. If you want a post to go out at 9 am without being awake at 9 am, you need an external tool. In this guide you will see how to schedule on Bluesky with Publishum, how to create an app password and what to watch so your links do not turn into dead text.
What an app password is
Bluesky does not use the same kind of login as other networks. Instead, it offers app passwords: a separate password, created by you, that only grants posting access. It is not your main password, it changes nothing in your account and you can revoke it at any time.
To create one, open Bluesky and go to Settings > App passwords. Give it a name, like “Publishum”, and copy the generated password. It is shown only once.
Step by step: schedule on Bluesky with Publishum
- Sign in with Google. On Publishum, click “Continue with Google”. No new password and no card at this point.
- Connect Bluesky. In “Add account”, choose Bluesky, type your handle (for example, you.bsky.social) and paste the app password. It takes about ten seconds. On X, Threads and LinkedIn the connection uses each network’s official login (OAuth); on Bluesky, the app password is the official way.
- Write the post. In the composer, write and tick the accounts. The same text can go to X and Threads. If you want something different on Bluesky, click its tab.
- Check the counter. The limit is 300 graphemes. The counter changes color near the limit and turns red when you go over. To test a text first, use the character counter per network.
- Add up to 4 images. Write alt text for each one. It helps people who use screen readers and earns goodwill with the Bluesky community.
- Pick a time or the queue. Set a date and time, or send it to the next free slot (9 am, 1 pm and 6 pm by default, adjustable).
- Follow the link you get back. When the post goes out, the dashboard shows the status and the link for each network. If something fails, you see the reason and a button to try again.
- Or send it on WhatsApp. Send the text and photos to the Publishum number. The bot replies with a preview and you answer 1 to publish or 2 to schedule.
What the native scheduler does not do
The answer here is short: Bluesky has no native scheduler. Every post goes out the moment you press the button. In practice, that means:
- No set time. To publish at 9 am, you need to be in the app at 9 am.
- No queue. You cannot write ten posts on Sunday and let one go out each day.
- No other networks. What you publish on Bluesky stays on Bluesky. X and Threads are done separately.
That is why an external tool is needed. The point is to pick one that treats Bluesky as a main network, not as an extra.
Tips for Bluesky posts
300 graphemes, not 300 letters
Bluesky counts graphemes, meaning what shows up as one character on screen. An emoji with a skin tone counts as one, even though it is several code points underneath. The Publishum counter counts the same way Bluesky does.
Links need a facet
On Bluesky, a link pasted into the text is only clickable if it comes marked with a facet, an annotation the protocol requires. Without it, the URL shows up as dead text. The same goes for @mentions and #hashtags. Publishum detects and marks each one for you, the way the AT Protocol expects.
Up to 4 images, with alt text
The maximum is 4 images per post. Use alt text to describe what is in the image. It is quick and it makes a difference.
Same post, three networks
Bluesky sits between X (280) and Threads (500). A text of up to 280 fits all three. If yours is longer, use the X tab for the short version.
How much it costs
Publishum has three plans paid by Pix: Solo for R$29, Creator for R$79 and Studio for R$249 per month. All of them publish to Bluesky. The difference is the number of accounts and the automation features. See the details on the pricing page. 7-day guarantee: if it is not for you, we refund your Pix.
